Futurama Returns - but still only as four straight-to-DVD-movies

Sadly, Billy West misinformed about this. Only the four DVD-movies will be released, as previously planned. More info here: http://billywest.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2020&KW=billywest

Below is the original post by Billy West, which is erronous:

"Another 26 episodes of Futurama will shortly go into production! This news comes from none other than Billy West (voice of Fry) himself, in a short post to his own message board. No further details are available, except that it's likely to be on TV, not straight to DVD"

The first thing I would suggest is that instead of seeding to the slashdot article, it would have been better to seed to the actual Billy West message board post. (The Newsvine Code of Honor asks that we seed as close to the source as possible. You can't get closer than the actual source.) You could have then included a link at the end of your description to the slashdot commentary.

As for the return. I'm of two minds: I absolutely "love" Futurama. I own every episode and feel it eclipsed The Simpsons in overall quality. I think it did so because it went out before it had a chance to get stale. If they produce this series from the point the show ended, that will mean Lela and Frey hooking up. This is the kiss of death.

I wrote a post here on Newsvine all about how less is more for television and that 2 or 3 seasons is a good goal. (Futurama pushed it's luck and managed 5 (technically 4) perfect seasons.)

If you're interested, you can read that here.

This is great news.

I couldn't find any info about the studio though. Are they coming back to Fox? Comedy Central?

Futurama debuted in 1999, the same year as Family Guy. What was old and dead is now new and funny.

            Billywest.com - "HERE'S GREAT NEWS!
Here's the official word on Futurama!!
David X. phoned me about an hour ago and said that this Futurama project
is a done deal! Here's the word from DX---
There are 4 DVD movies that we'll start recording at the end of July or
            August.Full feature length FUTURAMA movies.
Everybody is excited to get back together--as I am!

            Into the Future,
            Billy"

Not a series, 4 DVD movies but that's still cool.

                Bad News Everyone.

HEY GUYS ----Please forgive me but I'm getting different information than
what I was given about Futuarma. DXC told me that this info was not true
right now --I think the DVD's are happening at some point, but I'm terribly
sorry about the misinformation! Please help me to tell all the posters about
this.I'll find as much accurate info as I can!

                Thanks,
                Billy

                And another:

                Guys,
I'm sorry I gave inaccurate info on the cartoon.I was told on one end that the
TV show was a go but DXC enlightened me (with a hammer) that this was
not the case.I think there is a Futurama project as in DVD's but I appearently
had bad info. But I do live to give good Futurama news to people. So I must've
                died or something.

                All eyes on the skies,

                Billy
